SUBOTRON
SUBOTRON is the platform for Digital Game Culture in Vienna, Austria est. 2004.
The team develops, promotes and discusses the past, present and future of games beyond entertainment. More than 400 lectures, panels and workshops with international keyplayers from science, education, arts and business have established the platform as one of the most sustainable hubs for impact games in Europe.
SUBOTRON supports young game dev talent in designing interactive experiences as empathy machines for social improvement. It has been organising an annual live pitch competition for student projects since 2013.
Since 2007, FROG – Future and Reality of Gaming has brought together researchers and practitioners from diverse disciplines to discuss key questions in game studies and game development, reflect on the significance of play for society, culture, and education, and jointly explore the future and realities of gaming.
SUBOTRON, the New York NGO Games for Change and the Belvedere joined forces in spring 2026. Together, they organized events at Austrian universities where playable prototypes of digital games were created that are inspired by the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), or used the Open Content Collection of Belvedere . These games show how digital technologies can address future issues and make artistic heritage accessible through interactive formats.
